White Spot Treatment
White Spots
White spots on teeth are signs of demineralization underneath intact enamel. Bacteria produce acids, which break down the minerals in the tooth creating porosities in the tooth. The porosities become fluid filled developing a whitish discoloration associated with demineralization. This discoloration is the result of the difference in refraction of light through healthy enamel and fluid filled porosities. Some causes of white spots on teeth are due to the removal of orthodontic bands and brackets after braces, fluorosis, erosion, xerostomia (dry-mouth), and hypocalcification. Treatment options for white spots on teeth usually involve re-mineralization using pastes, creams, and topical treatments. Some of these include fluoride therapy or some form of calcium phosphate paste. In many cases, white spots can be treated with no drilling or numbing with Icon resin infiltration.
