We understand that you may feel slightly anxious about the prospect of having a tooth removed, especially if you have never undergone this procedure before and do not know what to expect. The information below should help you prepare for the procedure and care for the surgical site afterward.
Steps Involved in Tooth Extraction
The first thing we do when you come in for your tooth extraction appointment is make sure that you feel comfortable. One of the assistants working with Dr. Albritton or Dr. Ardovino will give you a shot of Novocain in the gums near the extraction site. Your gums should be numb in just a few minutes. Your dentist then uses a piece of equipment called a dental elevator to loosen the tooth from its socket and remove it with one sharp pulling movement.
Depending on the structure of your tooth and its roots, the tooth may break when your dentist pulls on it and it may take more than one pull to remove it. However, your medication will still be in effect, and you will not feel any discomfort if this happens.
Dr. Albritton or Dr. Ardovino places a gauze pad at the extraction site immediately after removing the tooth. You should bite down on it until the bleeding stops, but be sure to change the gauze pad for a clean one when it becomes soaked with blood. We also encourage you to follow a soft foods diet for a few days. You can follow your normal oral healthcare routine.
