Extractions

Extractions involve taking the entire tooth out of the mouth. This may be appropriate for several reasons. One indication is when a tooth has a cavity that is so large that there is not enough tooth structure left to support a restoration. Other indications include an abscess or infection surrounding the root of the tooth originating from the nerve, an abscess originating from an infection in the gums, or severe bone loss around the tooth from severe periodontal disease. After an extraction you can expect some tenderness at the extraction site, but with proper home care the site generally heals within several weeks.
