Partial Dentures
Partial dentures are fabricated to replace missing teeth in the arch and use the existing teeth as anchors. There are several types of removable partial dentures. Conventional metal-based partials consist of a metal framework to which the acrylic and teeth are affixed. Metal-based partials offer strength advantages over alternatives. However, there may be some metal visible when the patient speaks. Another option is a flexible partial. Flexible partials are desired by many patients due to their more natural aesthetics. They do not contain any metal. Flexible partials are a great choice in certain situations like when the space being filled is “tooth bound,” meaning it has a tooth to support the partial on each side of the space being filled. You and your dentist can discuss the type of partial denture that would work best in your individual case.
